Trader Joe's Ice Cream Bon Bons

I never knew about the history of bon bons and how they evolved as a dessert. After some research, I found that Sanaa Chocolate’s has a great post about the history of bon bons.
Their article says that Bon Bons or (Bonbons), originated in France in the 1600s and were filled with candied fruit. Overtime, Bon Bons grew in popularity beyond the royal class, and were exchanged as gifts around the holidays and New Year.
Today, many variations and artistic creations of Bon Bons exist, filled with caramel, chocolate, and — in the case of Trader Joe’s — ice cream.

As I mentioned in my last product review, the design and real-life usability of packaging is a part of how I score these products.
Having a realistic product photo on the front of the packaging is an eye-catching way to get consumers to stop and look at the product, especially those of us who have never eaten a Bon Bon before.
Oreo ice cream is one of my favorites, so when I saw that these bon bons had a layer of crumbly cookies under vanilla ice cream, I knew I had to try them.
I also like that the packaging had a tab to re-close the box, should you only eat a few of the bon bons.
The individual bon bons also came in an organized container, rather than loose in the box, which helps maintain their shape.
How much does Trader Joe’s Ice Cream Bon Bons Cost? | Score 10 of 10
This box of bon bons cost $3.99. There are 12 bon bons in the packaging and they are reasonably sized, so I think this is a decent price.
The size of an individual bon bon is perfect — enough to satisfy a dessert craving, but not so tiny that you feel like you need to eat the whole box to taste the flavor.
Ice Cream Bon Bon Texture and Flavor | Score 7 of 10
The best part of this bon bon is the chocolate shell, which reminds me of a Klondike Bar. The crumbled chocolate cookie at the bottom of the bon bon was dense and a little chewy, but I enjoyed having a variety of textures in one bite.
I think the most disappointing part of this dessert is the vanilla ice cream. The ice cream is plain and hardly tastes like vanilla. I thought for sure that the ice cream would provide a sweet, rich flavor to compliment the chocolate in this bon bon, but the chocolate instead was the focal point of this treat.
Recommendation
I would not buy these Ice Cream Bon Bons again. For me, the most important part of a product/ingredient is to have good flavor — otherwise, why bother to eat it?
These bon bons aren’t bad, as the chocolate shell and cookie crust were enjoyable. However, for equal-to or less than the cost of this dessert, you could have other Trader Joe desserts, like Portuguese Custard Tarts ($2.99) or Mango Ice Cream Bars ($3.49) which have better flavor.
