Tatte Bakery & Cafe

To start our first full day in Boston, we decided to head out from Marlborough Street to Boylston Street for breakfast.
We had a loose plan for our food options so we knew we wanted to try Tatte Bakery & Cafe, which was in the direction for our adventures for the day.
Tatte Bakery & Cafe
The summer air warmed our skin as we passed by construction on the nearby churches and buildings. Folks moseyed to their morning commutes. Boston’s energy was slower than New York City; I enjoyed our casual pace, and the ability to stop and take photos without getting bumped by crowds of people.
Like the businesses on Newbury Street, a large patio area took up the sidewalk in front of Tatte, which was an elegant looking, glass-front building. I could see customers working on laptops in the front window from where we were on the sidewalk. Since we planned to be outside most of the day we decided to have breakfast inside.
Tatte Bakery & Cafe Interior
Tatte Bakery & Cafe was an airy, open room. Black two-top tables lined the wall on the right, where a number of men worked on laptops — their drinks, dishes, and laptops took up most of the table from where they worked. It looked like 4-person tables were available farther back in the corner of the room.
A large wooden table took up the center of the room behind golden two-top tables.
The pastry case and menu ran along the left-hand side of the room, near the front window with bar seating that I saw from the sidewalk. The customers packed up their laptops, leaving their cups and dishes at their seats to be cleared.
We stopped at the end of the case and read the menu, which was broken into categories — Breakfast, tartines, shakshuka, plates, sandwiches and salads. Luckily there was no line so we could take our time and review the menu.
I was distracted by the glorious stacks of bread, cookies, and pastries to my right. We decided to order our main breakfast dishes from the menu and select one pastry to share from the case.
A young man behind the counter accepted our pastry order and directed us down the counter to place our breakfast and coffee order.
Another pastry case to our right displayed immaculate cakes and chilled desserts as we placed our coffee order. I could’ve easily picked another dessert from this case to have with breakfast, but I decided to stick with the current pastry we already ordered.
We paid and were given table number 8 on a long metal pole. We claimed one of the gold two-top tables near the front door and waited for our drinks.
Breakfast at Tatte Bakery & Cafe
Iced Latte | $4.50
A server brought us our coffees while we waited for our breakfast dishes.
I ordered a regular iced latte, which turned out to be pretty plain/mellow. My boyfriend ordered a honey iced latte and it was so sweet that we mixed our two drinks to have the perfect balance of sweetness and coffee.
Roasted Strawberry Turnover
I unfortunately do not have a record of this turnover’s price. I could’ve selected any and all pastries in the case, but the idea of a roasted strawberry turnover seemed more interesting to me than a classic apple turnover, so we decided to try that.
I loved the savory flavor of the strawberry filling. The strawberries were naturally sweet and had a great roasted flavor. The pastry was flaky and fresh with a hint of sweetness from the icing. It was a great choice to have with our iced coffees.
Prosciutto & Parmesan Scrambled Egg Plate | $10.00
I wanted a hearty breakfast in preparation for the walking we planned to do for the day, so I selected the scrambled egg plate. The tomato and goat cheese mousse looked interesting under this section of the menu, but I knew I would like prosciutto and parmesan, so I went with that instead.
My scrambled eggs arrived on a thick piece of sourdough bread. A delightful helping of parmesan cheese dusted the top. Two long slices of prosciutto draped on the side of the plate. It was buttery and tender and easily pulled apart. I cut a wedge of the sourdough and blanketed it with the prosciutto. The eggs were warm and softly scrambled (my favorite). At first I thought this wouldn’t be enough for breakfast, but the bread was more filling then I expected, so it turned out to be a filling meal to start our day!
Traditional Shakshuka | $14.00
I’ve heard of Shakshuka before but have never made nor eaten it before. Tatte’s shakshuka was a tomato and bell pepper sauce with two over easy eggs, cumin spiced onions, topped with feta and parsley. Three thick pieces of golden challah bread reminded me of grilled cheese, it was so crisp and warm.
This was a huge portion. I tried a bite of the sauce and it was unique and flavorful. My boyfriend enjoyed it. If I get back to Tatte in the future I would order one of the shakshuka dishes.

I would give our visit to Tatte Bakery & Cafe a 9/10 for the following:
Decor and Design
I loved the classic black and white interior design in Tatte Bakery & Cafe. Their black and white chalkboard menus reminded me of Haute Coffee’s menus. Despite the black and white designs, the space felt welcoming and airy with the large front windows, wooden and gold accent seating, and industrial style lighting. I loved that the pastry and dessert cases were filled to the brim and perfectly neat and organized.
Service
It’s a thoughtful operation to have the pastry and bread cases separate from the breakfast and coffee when ordering. As we ate our breakfast, a line of people formed around our table toward the doorway as individuals ordered boxes of pastries and breads. Some folks moved past this line to order coffee to-go, while others got their own table numbers and sat next to us and had breakfast. A woman who delivered our coffee and breakfast also cleared the tables, so when we were finished, we stacked our dishes on the table and she came by to clear them. Overall, I felt the staff was friendly and clear in their operations.
Food
I was blown away with the quality and beautiful displays of the breads and baked goods. We learned that Tatte Bakery & Cafe had other stores throughout Boston, and watched a delivery truck unload baked goods as we ate our breakfast. Our breakfast items were delicious and fresh. I wish I lived in Boston so I could visit Tatte frequently and try all of their pastries and desserts.
